Design for Dark Tourists

Checkpoint Specifications

Size and details of the physical checkpoints.

Design

Landmarks and checkpoints are key to wayfinding design. People make decisions based off perceived risk, compliance cost, and social decision making factors. A cohesive brand style and system gives communications credibility because they are familiar.

Explosions

Implementing this visual language on signage and as checkpoints in dark tourism destinations will help keep tourists informed to make safe decisions during their journey.
On the reverse of the sign, arrow color is different, showing the user is going in the safer direction. The map is also flipped around showing an updated view of the landscape.
Sitting in front of only the emergency level checkpoint, a lenticular reveals the warning information only at close distances.

Dimensions

Checkpoints are designed to be viewed at a distance, therefore they are from 10 - 13 feet tall. The Emergency level checkpoint is the tallest, indicating it is the most serious and severe to approach.
